Professor of Archaeology

The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History conducts research and education in four subjects: archeology, historical archeology, historical osteology and Classical Studies. The subjects have different backgrounds with respect to history of ideas and are working partly with different source materials, methods and theoretical perspectives. The department conducts interdisciplinary research and participates in several international projects.

The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at Lund University is one of the oldest and largest departments of archaeology in Sweden, and one of the top 100 in the world according to the QS World University Ranking.

We offer a vital environment for research and education and have done so since 1805.

The department currently consists of four subjects: Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Archaeology, Historical Archaeology and Historical Osteology.

The subjects interact with each other, while having different backgrounds in terms of history of ideas and partly different source materials, methods and theoretical perspectives. This is the department’s strength from both a research and educational point of view. For this reason, our students often choose to combine our different subjects in their studies to create an individually designed degree profile.

The subject of Archaeology in Lund is designed to primarily encompass the study of pre-historic material culture, living conditions and settlements, the relationship with the natural environment and contact between societies. An important part of this study is the comparison of different materials from different cultures within and outside the Nordic region. This entails a long-term perspective that is also significant in the evaluation of many modern-day problems and for contemporary development. Research and education focus on theory, methodology, field archaeology, and studies on periods ranging from the Stone Age to the Viking Age in a European context.

The ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in Swedish within two years.

A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor.

The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall be the degree of the expertise required to qualify for employment.

To be qualified for employment as a professor, the applicant shall have completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means.



For appointment as a professor, the following assessment criteria shall apply:



Very good expertise in research, teaching, administration and other expertise of importance in relation to the position’s subject matter and work duties as well as a personal ability overall that is of relevance to carry out the work duties

Very high research qualifications including a very good national and international standing as a researcher

A very high level of teaching ability, including a very good ability to conduct, develop and lead educational activities on different levels with a variety of teaching methods.

A good ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.

A good ability to cooperate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.

A good general ability to lead and develop activities.



Additional qualifications:



A documented ability to initiate, lead and execute large research projects

A documented ability to secure competitive research grants

Documented experience of and expertise in academic leadership

Documented well-established international network

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.
