Job Title:                        Project Manager
 
Reporting to:                 Museum Director
 
Responsible for:            Temporary and contract staff, Volunteers, Placements.
 
Working with:               Director, Administration and Marketing Officer, Learning and                                            Outreach Officer, Learning Project Officer, Volunteer
                                       co-ordinator,           Documentation Officer.
 
Purpose:
 
Responsible for project managing on behalf of Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum the development and commissioning of the Archaeology of Wessex gallery.
 
Main Duties and responsibilities:
 
Working with colleagues, the post-holder will undertake a range of activities commensurate with the grading and responsibility of the post, which will include the following:
 
1.           To project-manage the Archaeology of Wessex gallery redevelopment from scheme design through to delivery on behalf of Salisbury Museum.
 
2.           Ensure compliance with Heritage Lottery Fund terms and conditions.
 
3.           Act as the key museum point of contact for the gallery redevelopment project and co-ordinate the core project team which will meet on a monthly basis. This will involve liaising with other members of the project team: principally museum staff and externally appointed museum designers and other specialists such as the Project Curator, Conservation Architect and Quantity Surveyor.
 
4.           Develop and maintain a detailed Project Execution Plan (PEP).
 
5.           Identify key risks for the project and maintain a Capital Risk Register.
 
6.           Communicate and resolve project issues.
 
7.           Revise and develop the project timetable and budget, establishing key milestones and decision points. Help to ensure that the project runs to time and budget, highlighting any areas of concern to the core project team.
 
8.           Take responsibility for the appointment and management of external contractors involved in delivering the project, including the development of tender documents, briefs and specifications.
 
9.           Establish a detailed cost-control planning schedule for covering every service or material purchase or spend, showing planned, committed and paid funds for each item in the schedule.  This includes ensuring that all commitments and payments are correctly authorised and any stage payments are authorised.
 
10.        Work with the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury Cathedral and Wiltshire Council to ensure that gallery development works meet all building regulations standards and other statutory consents.
 
11.        Ensure that all actions within the museum premises comply with the required Health & Safety legislation and sanction any safe working permits required for the building and electrical contractors.
 
12.        Work with museum staff and volunteers to develop and implement maintenance manuals and schedules for the redeveloped gallery areas.
 
13.        Provide information on the gallery redevelopment project for any publicity and marketing to specified deadlines.
 
14.        To promote equality and diversity in all areas of work within and outside the museum, in line with legislation and museum policy.
 
15.     To undertake other such analogous duties as may be allocated by the Director or his representative.

Conditions of Service
 
1        Salary                    £29,236 to £33,661 per annum
                                       (equivalent to PO scale – spinal points 35-40 pro rata)

4        Hours                     Part-time – 21 hours per week (to include some                                                         weekends/evenings), but could be flexible depending on needs                                       of project

6        Leave                     21 days (pro rata) in addition to Bank and Public Holidays. The                                       leave year runs from the month of commencement of                                                   employment.
 
7        Probation               There will be an initial probationary period of three months                                                during which           time the successful candidate and the Museum                                       will establish their suitability to each other. The Museum                                                reserves the right to extend the probationary period to six                                           months in exceptional circumstances.
 
8        Pension                  The museum can arrange access to a stakeholder pension

4.       Liaise regularly with the core project team (principally museum staff above and    externally appointed museum designers) over the development of the gallery to      ensure the final design is sympathetic to the gallery narrative.
 
5.       Assist the designers and project manager with drawing up specifications for the     display, lighting, conservation and security requirements for the gallery.
 
6.       Liaise with external lenders over any long term loans for the gallery.
 
7.       Liaise with the conservation team over any specific conservation needs for objects         and original artwork.
 
8.           Liaise with any externally appointed specialist advisors over the content of the gallery, for example archaeology specialists and scriptwriter.
 
9.           Liaise with the teams working on the Stonehenge Visitor Centre project and the new Bronze Age galleries at Wiltshire Heritage Museum to ensure that the museum’s gallery is complementary to what is proposed at these locations.
 
10.        Assist with the cataloguing the collections to be displayed – which will include supervising the work of the Documentation Officer and volunteers.
 
11.        Oversee the de-installation of the existing gallery and installation of the new gallery.
