The Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences
(OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a
STUDENT ASSISTANT POSITION (F*M)
(part-time, 20h per week)
within the framework of the FWF-funded project ‘Unlocking the secrets of cremated human remains’.
The position provides excellent training opportunities and is located at the Institute for Oriental and
European Archaeology in Vienna, Austria.
We offer this position for a period of 6 months initially, with the possibility of an extension.
The project will cover all expenses directly related to the conduct of the research, including travel costs.
The candidate will be responsible to assist Katharina Rebay-Salisbury and her team in administrative,
organisational and research tasks. This includes conducting literature surveys, editorial work, scanning
literature and filling data from reports into spreadsheets; helping at workshops, conferences and
outreach events; assisting with osteological analysis.
The successful candidate will have a BA in prehistoric archaeology and/or biological anthropology and
will be registered as a student at the University of Vienna. S/he will have an interest in the later
European prehistory of Central Europe and be familiar with burial archaeology and cemetery analysis.
Basic knowledge of human osteology will be an advantage. Good language skills in German and
English are required, as well as computing skills relating to working with simple databases and image
processing software (e.g. EndNote, Excel, Photoshop).
We offer an annual gross salary of € 14.816,20 according to the salary scheme of the Austrian Science
Fund (FWF).
