Research Assistant/Associate in Near Eastern Archaeology (Fixed Term)

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2021.

The McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research invites applications for a full-time Research Assistant/Associate to work on the project "Memories for Life: Materiality and Memory of Ancient Near Eastern inscribed private objects". This is a 4.5-year collaborative project funded by the Swedish Research Council (PI Jakob Andersson, Uppsala, co-PI Christina Tsouparopoulou, Cambridge), which aims to identify and highlight the personal perspective, materiality and agency in inscribed objects commissioned by private individuals in the ancient Near East throughout three millennia.

The post holder will be responsible to conduct research on Near Eastern inscribed private objects of the 2nd and 1st millennia BC, and participate in relevant conferences and workshops as well as publish results of their research. The post holder will report to Dr Christina Tsouparopoulou, Principal Investigator of the project in Cambridge.

The post holder will have a PhD in ancient Near Eastern Archaeology or in a relevant field of knowledge (or be near to completion). Experience with archaeological and anthropological theory is essential. Competence in digital humanities applications is highly desirable. The post holder will need to extract information from the inscriptions as well, and hence familiarity with Akkadian and/or Sumerian is highly desirable.

The salary for the Research Associate starts at £32,816 - £40,322 per annum, if you have not yet received your PhD you will be appointed as a Research Assistant and the salary will be starting at £26,715 - £30,942 per annum until the PhD is awarded.

Starting date: 1 February 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter. Interviews with shortlisted candidate will be carried out via zoom in January.
