Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University. The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure earning Assistant Professor position in archaeology for the 2022-2023 academic year.

This position is part of a cluster of new hires whose research interests are broadly or thematically related to issues of Crisis, Resistance, Sustainability, and Resilience. Issues such as climate change, inequality, new technological systems, ethno-nationalism, and political-economic competition, among other dynamics, drive the predominant global challenges.

We are searching for scholars whose work addresses the “human side” of these challenges:

-on human adaptations to crises and catastrophes (from hurricanes, to increasing global temperatures and sea level rise, to war, conquest, and political struggle) and/or

-on human adaptations that move towards (or provide evidence for) sustainable lifeways (e.g., eco villages, new technologies) and resilient communities.

Geographic area and specialization are open, but research that addresses issues of prehistoric civilizational collapse factors and responses/adaptations, sustainability in the prehistoric record, sociopolitical instability, inequality, or other related dimensions is preferred. In addition, applications reflecting expertise in new techniques and technologies will receive special consideration. A successful candidate will be committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring, demonstrate research potential, and have an active, field-based presence. The Department of Anthropology has archaeological lab space and houses a substantial zooarchaeological comparative collection of south Florida fauna, fish, and shells.

The teaching load is 5 courses (3/2) during the academic year. The candidate should be prepared to teach Archaeological Research Methods, Introduction to Anthropology, a course on a geographical region, and topically focused courses (e.g., Florida Archaeology, Native American Cultures) as well as a graduate seminar in archaeology.

The Department of Anthropology embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will participate in a climate that attracts students of all ethnicities, races, nationalities, genders, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. In a continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide equal educational and employment opportunities, the department actively encourages applications from members of underrepresented groups in higher education. Of special interest are candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and possess a strong commitment to improving access to higher education for historically marginalized peoples.

Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in Anthropology from an accredited institution. The successful candidate must have the Ph.D. completed by the start of the Fall 2022 semester.
