Stipendiary Lecturership in Classics - 8 Hours

Contract type: 1 year Fixed-term – 8 hours per week

Salary: between £18,616 and £20,937 per annum (current rates), according to qualifications and experience.

Start date: 15 September 2022

St Hugh’s College invites applications for a Stipendiary Lecturer in Classics . The appointment is to cover Professor Timothy Rood’s sabbatical leave.

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver an average of eight hours per week during term of high-quality undergraduate tutorial teaching in Classics.

Applicants should have evidence of the skills needed for higher education teaching in tutorial or small group settings, underpinned by a research record commensurate with the stage of their career. They should have, or be close to completing, a doctorate in a relevant field.

The papers for which teaching is sought by the college are:

For the First Public Examination (Honour Moderations or ‘Mods’): Homer Iliad; Texts & Contexts; Greek and Latin Language; Aristophanes’ Political Comedy.
For the Final Public Examination (‘Greats’): Greek Core; Early Greek Hexameter Poetry; Greek Tragedy; Second Classical Language (Greek).

There will also be a need for language support, generally in the form of reading classes for other text-based papers for Mods and Greats.

They will be a member of the Senior Common Room with an entitlement to four free meals a week at the common table when the kitchen is open. Please see the Further Particulars and Selection Criteria for further details.
