PhD position The Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural and Religious Studies invites applicants for a PhD in the environmental humanities with a historical focus, with starting date August 1st, 2023. This position is for a fixed-term period of four years. The successful applicant will join the Environmental Humanities research group at the University of Bergen, an interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers in the fields of history, archaeology, cultural studies, linguistics, literature, media studies, political science, social anthropology, science and technology studies, and beyond. Its purpose is to bring PhD candidates and faculty together to develop interdisciplinary research projects, to expand members’ professional networks and collaboration across the humanities, and to support environmentally-themed research and other contributions from the humanities disciplines. The research group is part of the Faculty of Humanities´ strategic investment in research groups 2023-25. Qualifications and personal qualities: The scope of the applicant’s master's thesis must be a minimum of 30 credits (ECTS). Applicants must hold a Norwegian master's degree or equivalent foreign degree in history, archaeology, environmental humanities, or a related discipline. It is a prerequisite that the master’s degree has been awarded at the time of application. Applicants who do not have a Norwegian master’s degree will be evaluated according to the regulations of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT). The Department can send documentation of foreign education to NOKUT in order to evaluate whether this degree is equivalent to a Norwegian master’s degree. The applicant must be able to work independently and efficiently and possess a demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team. The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English Applicants will be evaluated according to admission requirements in The Faculty of Humanities' PhD Program pt. 2.1. In assessing the applications, the academic quality and feasibility of the proposed PhD project and the academic qualifications of the candidate will be considered. Preference will be given to those applicants whose projects align with those of one or more members of the environmental humanities research group who could serve as the applicant’s supervisor. In cases where ranked applicants have approximately equivalent qualifications, strategic considerations, motivation, and the applicant´s personal eligibility will be taken into account. About the PhD position: The main purpose of the PhD position is to complete a doctoral degree, which qualifies the holder for a career in academia and for other forms of employment that requires high analytical skills. The duration of the PhD position is four years. Twenty-five percent of the position will be dedicated to obligatory duties, which will consist primarily of undergraduate teaching at the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural and Religious Studies, but which will also include administrative work. The administrative tasks may be connected to the research group in Environmental humanities. The successful applicant’s research project will contribute to the research group’s work in the environmental humanities, defined as work that bridges the divide between the natural sciences and the humanities, as well as that between the academy and society, by applying humanistic methods and modes of thought to environmental subjects. The proposed project may have interdisciplinary elements, but it must be historically oriented and employ principally historical or archaeological methodologies. Applicants who have already held a PhD position at the University of Bergen are not eligible for employment. The employment period may be reduced if the selected candidate previously has been employed in a recruitment position. The PhD position requires that the applicant has his or her regular workplace at the University of Bergen, Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural and Religious Studies and comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times. About the research training: As a PhD candidate you must participate in the Faculty of Humanities’ educational programme. The programme consists of completing a training component of 30 ECTS, annual progress reporting and an approved midway evaluation.
