Candidates are expected to have an outstanding, internationally recognized academic record in research and teaching in the field of Classics/Greek philology, with a focus on ancient Greek literature. The ability to foster connections with fields of study extending or reaching beyond antiquity is desirable. Familiarity with textual criticism, textual transmission, and an active interest in digital philology are an asset. In teaching, candidates are expected to cover the field of ancient Greek Literature in its entire breadth. We expect the successful candidate to conduct innovative research, attract external research funding, and help shape interdisciplinary co-operations within a new Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. This institute is currently developed at the University of Zurich and seeks to bring into close contact multiple disciplines studying the history of culture, among them Greek and Latin philology and literary studies, Medieval Latin philology, archaeology, and ancient history. The postholder’s remit is also to foster collaboration within the University, with secondary schools, and with other institutions at the national and international level. Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant field and are expected to have completed their habilitation or equivalent academic qualifications at the time of application. They must have an excellent publication record in their field of research appropriate for the stage of their academic career. The successful candidate will also have very good knowledge of and appreciation for Latin studies. The main administrative language of the university and the language of instruction in the institute are German. Candidates are expected to have good knowledge of German at the time of appointment and to develop proficiency to teach in German within the first three years of their appointment.
